Coversations with Olivia

On the weather,
me: Do you know why it has been so cold and so wet recently?
Olivia: *thinks* Because China is snowing?
me: Nooo! Why you say because China is snowing??
Olivia: Don't know. Anyhow say one. hehe.

On her going to after-school-care,

me: So do you like Child Care Centre?
Olivia: It's not "Child Care Centre"! It's "Student Care Centre"!
me: oops...

Missing the Brother

Brother has been in Tekong for the past two days.

Last night, father came into my room and told me Olivia thought of brother and cried then she fell asleep. So poor thing.

I SMSed Brother and all he said was,

Boring here. Go back home better. This Thursday...

Don't know if he was touched or not.

And he replied at 5.37am this morning! Freaking early.

Lend me a bag

Olivia, to me, sheepishly,

jie, do you have any bags? Because mine very lame...

She needed to bring a bag to Student Care Centre tomorrow and didn't want to bring her schoolbag (which she would then need to unpack) her barbie-doll sling bag, or any of the other bags which have some sort of prints on them (which are lame). This 9-year-old girl is growing up!

In the end I lent her my Nightmare before Christmas bag which I haven't been using nor intend to use in the near future. Kind of funny, exchange one type of print for another type of print.

Quotes

I feel quite screwed up.

-----------------
My brother brought his non-girlfriend home again today. They're still here now.

Me to him before Olivia and I headed out for a while,

Don't hanky-panky ah!

Olivia was very curious,

olivia: What is donkey-donkey?
me: er... nothing lah.
olivia: orh, I know! Like molest right?
me: Haha, yar lah!
olivia: (starts singing something along the lines of honkey-donkey or donkey-donkey)
me: It's "hanky-panky", not "donkey-donkey"!

That round round thing

olivia: You know right, when you use the round round thing to look at the leaf right, you can see (something).
me: What round round thing?
olivia: The round round thing... Like when words are very small then cannot see then you use...
me: Orh! Magnifying glass! Olivia, "magnifying glass", not "round round thing"!

Olivia's (sort-of) haiku

Haiku is a type of Japanese poetry. Here are several facts about an english haiku:

  • It is usually split into 3 lines, unlike the Japanese version which is usually in one line.

  • There are commas, hyphens, elipses, or implied breaks.

  • They refer to the natural world.

  • They are usually in the present tense.

  • Each line in a haiku follows the 5-7-5 syllables pattern - 1st line 5 syllables and so on.

Here is Olivia's (sort-of) haiku:

I love my bear bear,
Cute and soft like a cushion,
I kiss him a lot.

On MSN - Apology

Olivia, apologizing to me on MSN,

I am very sorry for what I have done. Please forgive me.

Kids say the darnest things indeed. Adults should learn to apologize in this way. My mother have instilled the art of feeling guilty after doing something wrong in her very well.

Paper Hamsters

I just "bought" 2 paper hamsters from my sister, one adult and one baby. I was happily playing with them, the little one was really very playful, running around a lot. Olivia looked at me then said,

Eh, the hamster upside down!

me: huh? Oh, these are the ears ah? I thought they are the legs lehz...

Here are the hamsters, correct way up:

Then we fed the paper hamsters with nicely cut up blue paper and they are currently resting beside my mouse, full of blue paper inside of them.

--------------------------
Decided to send my mother off at the airport today together with my family. Didn't make much eye contact with her but we took some pictures and she told me to take care of Olivia as well as some last minute instructions on her lessons this Sunday.

Just remembered today that Sunday is Mother's Day and she will be back at night. However, I've conveniently forgotten the occasion and have scheduled a date with a friend at that time. Feel a bit guilty. Can only make myself feel better by the fact that she'll be back at only 10pm at night.

Then my father, brother, sister and I had dinner at Ikea after which which we walked around next door - Giant. Had a fantastic time with them. Of course nicole had to spice things up by asking through twitter where am I when ridz is at Geek Terminal with them.

Speaking of Ikea reminded me of this song "Ikea" by Jonathan Coulton. You can listen to the song here, under the heading 4 Funny Ones. Song "Code Monkey" is also nice, I absolutely love it. Thanks to Chern Jie for the recommendation and for explaining to me what is indie (independent) music.

Olivia's writing/drawing

Olivia suddenly told me yesterday or the day before that she loves me

I... love... Ng... Wan... Ah Bear!

Of course she was kidding about the Ah Bear part. =P Then yesterday she drew/wrote our names on a piece of paper:

It is all very sweet and nice, except for one thing:

One of the chinese characters of my name is opposite!

olivia: Yar what, correct what! Three日mah!
me: Yar, but it is opposite... haha...
olivia: Orh! haha...

Then she said to pin this on my noticeboard so that other people can see and if they ask how come the name is wrong, tell them that it is her who wrote it and she didn't know how to write it.

Children! They do the sweetest things sometimes while at other times they're utterly naughty. Sounds like "idiosyncrasy credits" or something. Forgot the name, cousin, please correct me. =)

Am studying Developmental Psychology now, so much information, have to learn to link the different chapters fast.

Random; ants

Fell asleep again just now for a couple of hours. Damn.
Pimples are sprouting up quite badly too. Damn. Looks pretty gross and scary. It's not good - it scares away guys. Not that there were any after me in the first place. Ok so I guess that it doesn't really matter.

-------------------------
Olivia, comparing ants,

Black ants are very friendly!

I'm sure they are!

Last night - Olivia

Olivia last night, back after a trip to the mall with my father,

olivia: (shouting through the door grills to me) I bought a book with keys leh!
me: is it? Why got keys?
olivia: You know I was so scared you will scold me.
me: of course lah, buy for what? No need what.

Am I so scary?

Hold your thoughts on she being cute. Last night at 10.30pm, she still hasn't finished her maths homework although she had an entire afternoon to deal with it. She came to my room and sat at my table with me teaching her. Within a while, she was fidgeting, sighing and tsk-ing. It was really irritating but I didn't scream at her, just patiently waited for her to answer my question. Somehow along the way she flared up and went off.

"Too tired," she said. She laid down on the bed while I kept bombarding her with comments like "Tomorrow go to school let teacher scold nevermind, hor!" and "Tomorrow remember to copy from your friend ah!" (my mom hasuntil she couldn't take it anymore, took her homework and went over to my grandmother's place to do. But because my uncle and the TV is there, she couldn't really do anything. Distraction, you see. I went over and told her to come back and do but did not insist, just stated it then left. No point insisting because she herself knows who is right.

Some time later she came into my room sat there and said "nobody teach me", so after I have rebutted her a bit, I went on to teach her. After a while she gets fidgeting again then made a huge tsking noise, snatched her paper off the table and went out of the room where she threw a temper and lost her eraser - which was found eventually in my room. After cooling down her temper for a bit with Ah Bear and a bit of teaching on the bed, she was obviously too tired to think. A bit pissed but knowing that it wasn't any use, I took her paper and told her to tell her teacher that she could not finish her work on time and to ask for another day. She called mummy and mum said the same thing as me too, only that mum will tell the teacher she couldn't finish her work. Spoilt brat, she.

Anybody say she's cute again? Her temper is growing increasingly fiery the older she grows. It reminded me of one person - myself. I had a terrible temper when I was young. Really bad. The kind where I'll kick the metal gate, throw things at it in anger, scream, slam doors, lock myself in the room etc. Actually this temper extended all the way into adolescence but is not so bad now.

NO, she's NOT cute when she flares up. I don't think you'll tell other people your kid is cute when he/she (I know somebody who'd prefer the term "it") flares up in the future.

She's bold though, and what people would say with a high EQ. I, on the other hand, do not have that. My EQ must be extremely low and which falls with age. Now I'm actually afraid of coming into contact with people. Mum and I were saying that she wouldn't have trouble surviving in the world next time. Linus

Maybe I should just bring a security blanket along with me to work next time.

Conversations

Shuxuan: Eh, wait... So you're a year 2? I thought you're a year 1!
me: Yar, year 2. Haha, I know I have a face that's two years younger than my age, haha...
Shuxuan: Yar!

I thought I improved already and look closer to my age. Just that day a family friend asked if I have already graduated. I thought she asked if I've graduated from university, but she looked so surprised when I said I'm studying at NUS that I realize she meant either graduation from JC or Polytechnic.

They really don't want to know the dirty thoughts behind this innocent-looking face.
-------------------------

Me: Wah, not bad, you know how to listen to the notes and tell which is which!
(I suspect she's pitch-perfect)
Olivia: *giggles happily and runs away*
